Are budget Android phones any good? – Redmi 1S Review

Hey everyone. It has been quite some time since I’ve done a phone review (due to lack of phones to review =P). But now I’m back with a review of the value for money Redmi 1S. I know it is a little late and numerous sites have already reviewed it some time ago but it never hurts to get yet another opinion on something before buying it, right? The full review (very lengthy) comes up right after the break but here is a recap of this phone’s main features.

Moto G – Officially available in Malaysia soon!

The new year has come and Chinese New Year is just around the corner. New clothes are a must for most Chinese communities but why stop there? With the Moto G launching, there’s finally an affordable but still good spec-ed Android phone from a reputable manufacturer. How much is it? Only RM698 for the 8GB or RM798 for the 16GB. You may be asking, at that kind of price, how good is this phone?

Unofficial Android 4.4 KitKat on Nexus 4

Can’t wait for Android 4.4 to be rolled out to your Nexus 4? Impatient? Paranoid Android team has gracefully decided to build and release a pure AOSP ROM for Nexus 4, Nexus 7 WiFi and Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi. Does it work? I’m glad to say, yes. It does work and I absolutely love how it looks. Transparent status bar and action bar? Yes, please. Voice activated searching from the home screen? Yes, please.

Here are some screen shots that I’ve grabbed off my device. For download links, they are available below or from AndroidPolice post. Not sure if I’m willing to go back to stock Android 4.3 JellyBean or not after this. I may stay on this ROM (provided it is stable enough) until Google releases the Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat binary then only I’ll flash back to stock and upgrade.

For those who wants to give it a test, do backup your current ROM first and use CWM Recovery to flash the Android 4.4 and gapps 4.4. Somehow, TWRP gives an error. If you need help, post it in the comments and I’ll do my best.

LG Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat

After being leaked in almost every way possible, Google has finally released the LG Nexus 5 for purchase from the Playstore. For those countries lucky enough to have access to that, orders have already started shipping and we will soon have reviews of the phone. Malaysia is still not one of those lucky countries to have access to purchasing devices directly from the Playstore and will have to wait patiently for LG to bring them in (at inflated prices most probably but here’s to hoping they do not). The LG Nexus 5 is listed at USD349 for the 16GB version while an extra USD50 (USD399) gets you the 32GB version. More after the break.
