My Galaxy S2 is currently with a mobile dealer for an estimate of repair cost and I expect to receive an estimate within a day or so. I’m readying myself for the worst, that it is going to cost about the same as what Samsung Service Center quoted me for. I am a little reluctant to pay RM700-RM800 to change the main board and perhaps battery and this may be a good time to move on to a Nexus phone. But on the other hand, the Galaxy S2 is still a pretty amazing device and it would be a shame to just let it die.
Best case scenario, I can get it repaired for about RM100-RM200. This would allow me to continue having use of the device while waiting for the next Nexus phone to be announced and launched. If and when I do move over to the next Nexus phone, my Galaxy S2 will be passed on to my girlfriend to replace her Galaxy Ace (she had already experienced and enjoyed the Galaxy S2 for a month or so before the water damage and loved it!).
Worst case scenario, it’s gonna cost RM700-RM800 to repair. This would then open up 2 possibilities – (1) getting Samsung to change the board and battery, (2) move on to a new phone. Honestly, if it is going to take anywhere close to RM700-RM800 to repair, I would more likely lean towards getting a new phone. A repaired phone is likely not to be the same as a new phone unless it involves a whole change of parts and even then, it may never be the same.
The middle ground, where repairs will cost around RM300-RM500 will likely be the price range where most thought has to be put in. A decent dual-core phone costs at least double of that, so a repair might make sense. But a repair has no guarantee that it will work perfectly as well, so a new phone might be better. Confused? You bet I am.
Sigh. At the end of the day, I still don’t know what I’ll do. I may end up bringing the phone over to Samsung Service Center and just swallow the bill. I might also just get a new phone. If I do get a new phone, it will most likely be the Nexus phone. How do I wish the new Nexus phone is out already. If that was the case, I would very likely be getting the new Nexus phone. Life just don’t turn out the way you want it to.
