This is a further continuation of my modem testing. Up to date, I’ve completed my test for 7 modems with another 3 more to go. It has been a long one and I can’t wait to update to the latest CM build but I have to finish all my modem testing first as I do not wish to change builds in the midst of testing. It may not have any impact on the results or it may, I’m unsure and no one can be 100% sure. Hence, I would rather not add another variable to what is already a very subjective and full of variables testing. Results can be found in the post below.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100
Area: Mostly around Bayan Lepas, Penang
This modem has a reputation on XDA as a modem that is quite usable in most areas. However, I am sad to report that I consider this modem quite problematic. While it didn’t happen every time, twice this modem caused a loss in mobile network signal while I was on the phone. It was frustrating and even more so when it took about a minute to regain the loss mobile network. Perhaps its the DiGi network, perhaps it is the area or perhaps it is just my phone, but I cannot recommend this modem. Try at your own risk.
Major issues: Dropped calls while on HSDPA/3G network.
Minor issues: On rare occasions, my phone will lose connectivity to Google servers (indicated by the signal logo turning grey instead of the normal blue) but usually it restores connection in less than 30 seconds.
This modem stands alongside XXKE7 as a reliable modem. However, I too have issues with this modem. While the issues I’ve had on this modem isn’t as severe as the issues I had on XXKE7, it isn’t the most stable either. On one occasion, I had to restart the phone when it lost connection to the Google servers and would not reconnect after more than a minute. I tried turning on Airplane mode and then off again but it didn’t help. Not great for sure.
Major issues: One instance where it would not connect to Google servers until a restart. On another instance, it lost connection to the Google servers and switching it to Airplane mode and back again did manage to help restore connection.
Minor issues: On quite a few occasions, my phone will lose connectivity to Google servers (indicated by the signal logo turning grey instead of the normal blue) but usually it restores connection in less than 1 minute.
Recommended by an XDA member who tested on UK’s Orange network, it is said that this modem provides good connection where others may fail. I decided to test whether I would get similar performance in Malaysia’s DiGi network. But after a few days of testing, I felt let down. This modem would lose connection to Google servers frequently while on 3G or HSDPA networks. While in a majority of the time it was able to regain the connection on its own, there are more than a couple of times where I had to switch to Airplane mode and back to get it reconnected to Google servers. This would happen more frequently than any other radio that I’ve tested.
Major issues: Frequent loss of connection to Google servers. At least once a day where I would need to switch to Airplane mode and back again to restore connection.
Minor issues: None.
This modem performed below average for me. I say this because while it started off great (as compared to NEKF2) and stable, it started to get from good to bad over the weekend. On a few occasions, a connection to the Google servers could not be established. Switching to Airplane mode and back again thankfully still helped to regain my network but a good radio should not even need this at all. When connection was available, it was usually able to stay on a strong and stable signal. One afternoon while I was in a shopping mall, I would randomly get data connection only to lose it while loading a page. Then, it would take minutes or even a Airplane switch before it would regain connection. A few pages later, the same thing would happen again. While I cannot be fully certain as to what caused that, it didn’t give me good impressions on this radio. It was also prone to losing connections after ending a call.
Major issues: An afternoon of trying to load pages for more than 2 hours. It may be an anomaly but it is still a negative point against it.
Minor issues: Connection loss after ending a call. Typically reconnected within a minute but there are exceptions to this.
Now I’m left with the last three modems that I want to test, the XXLPR, XXLPS and XXLPW. Do expect another week or two before I have the results. So far, the leading contender for best modem (for me) is still XXLPH. Can any of the last three modems perform better or on par with that modem? So far none have been able to.
