Three Premiership games remain for most clubs with the final double games this week for Man City and Tottenham. Although this is not the last week of matches, this is one week where the matches will be hotly contested and played with a take-no-prisoners attitude. Why?
Because of the title race and the race for fifth place.
The title race:
Man Utd vs Chelsea in what could potentially see Chelsea going top with two games remaining if they win this. The two clubs are equal on goal difference so Chelsea need to win by only one goal to take the lead based on goal difference. For Man Utd, this may not be a must win game but a win will almost certainly seal the title as their remaining two matches are far from difficult.
The race for fifth:
Man City and Tottenham play each other in a game that could decide Liverpool’s standing as fifth or sixth. A win for Man City over Tottenham coupled with Liverpool wining their game against Fulham will see Liverpool staying fifth on goal difference or points (if Tottenham fails to win against Blackpool). This will be an important psychological advantage for the next week’s game when Liverpool meets Tottenham at Anfield. If Tottenham manages to win against both Man City and Blackpool, then their meeting next week will be even more important for Liverpool as they try to regain fifth spot.
We will have an analysis on who will get the fifth spot after this week is over but let’s get into the analysis of Fulham vs Liverpool first.
Fulham does have an ok record at home, losing only three times while Liverpool has not been able to replicate their home form when playing away. This leads to an interesting match which (statistics wise) should see a draw or a narrow win for Fulham. However, I do think that Liverpool’s desire to hang on to fifth spot should see them performing well enough to overcome Fulham.
Liverpool’s Suarez and Kuyt have been performing excellently while Lucas and Spearing have been quietly doing their jobs shielding the defense. Maxi has also been on a good run, scoring 4 goals in the past 2 games when Carroll was not available for selection. Carroll is expected to be back for this match and that should see Maxi being relegated to the bench as Carroll partners with Suarez up front with Kuyt and Meireles down the wings. My feelings are that Suarez and Carroll will score in this match with Kuyt maybe popping in another.
Fulham has won 3-0 in their previous 2 matches and after their 3-0 away win against Sunderland last week, they will be confident of another victory this week. However, Liverpool will prove to be different oppositions than Sunderland or Bolton. I think that this will be a hotly contested game and this should be a 2-3 victory for Liverpool.
