Swensen’s is a restaurant in Gurney Plaza that serves Western food and ice creams. It has been a while since I last visited but given Sin Tian’s recent cravings for ice cream, I thought that it is the perfect opportunity to make a trip to Swensen’s. After having dinner there, I can report that the food quality and service quality is still pretty good.
Sin Tian wasn’t feeling very hungry so and ordered the Clam Chowder which came in the sour dough bread bowl. I ordered the Cheese Baked Spaghetti Bolognaise which was a beef-based spaghetti baked with cheese and topped with three meatballs.
Sin Tian liked the Clam Chowder, claiming that it is hot and tasty. Perfect for a cold day. The spaghetti was pretty good. I liked the baked cheese taste that seems to go quite well with the spaghetti. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly and wasn’t too hard or too soft. I even finished off the sour dough bread bowl of the Clam Chowder which made me slightly regret ordering drinks.
For drinks and desert, we shared a Treasure Island root beer float and a topped off with a sundae. The sundae lets you choose any two flavors of ice cream along with any two toppings. Thin Mint and Chewy Chocolate were the flavors while the toppings were Marshmallow syrup and Chocolate Chips. The sundae also comes with whipped cream, a cherry and a piece of wafer.
The root beer float was okay. Nothing special about it. But it is pretty big and would satisfy most cravings for root beer floats. The ice cream was pretty good but I didn’t like the chocolate too much. The mint went well with the chocolate chips but the marshmallow syrup didn’t add much to the taste. Perhaps we should have went for something else. The whipped cream on the sundae wasn’t very nice. I still prefer the Starbucks whipped cream which I feel is one of the best.
HSBC credit card users get a 10% discount and there’s no 6% Government tax. Swensen’s still serves good food and good ice cream. It is worth a visit for the Clam Chowder and ice cream if nothing else.
