Liverpool performed well this past weekend, winning both games and keeping a clean sheet in both matches. This will go a long way in helping Liverpool to maintain a place in Europe next season as they are now up to 7th position (though Newcastle and Stoke could leapfrog Liverpool with a win in their match in hand). This also means that the next match against Stoke is important as a loss there will see Stoke overtaking us.
Liverpool started off the double game week by winning away 3-0 at Wolves with Torres scoring a brace and Meireles scoring a beauty. This was followed by a 1-0 home win against Fulham, the only goal coming from a John Pantsil own goal.
I am sure that I am not alone in hoping that this is the turning point in Liverpool’s season and we start accumulating more points to stay comfortably in contention for a place in Europe. Under Dalglish, Liverpool may have found new life and if he continues to produce results like the past week, I see no reasons that he needs to be replaced at the end of this season.
I believe that it would be reasonable to give him a full season or two to build up the squad and bring in some players. Liverpool players need to believe and have confidence again if they are to challenge for major titles in years to come. And under Dalglish, they may have just found that.
I have never expected Liverpool to challenge for the title this year. It was always going to be a challenge too far after the departure of a few quality players that we have never fully replaced. Initially I was hoping for a top four finish to secure a place in next season’s Champions League. However after some dismal performances earlier in the season, I dropped my hopes to a top seven finish instead. Now, as long as Dalglish can get the players to perform consistently, I don’t see why we won’t be able to secure a top seven finish. Anything above that is a bonus.
Congratulations to Liverpool for 2 good wins and here’s hoping for more to come as Chinese New Year draws near.
